Ethel Mary Schwartz

July 16, 1935 – August 25, 2014

Ethel Mary Schwartz, age 79, died at The Cottages in Shawano on Sunday, August 24th, 2014. Ethel left us less than 24 hours from when she lost her beloved husband, Loren. She was born July 16th, 1935, on a dairy farm in Nadeau, MI to Antone and Rose (Frazer) Poupore. The youngest of four children, she graduated from Stevenson High School in 1953, where she played half-court basketball. After graduation, she worked for Burlington Railroad in Chicago for 10 years as a statistician. During this time, she traveled to California and Colorado with her girlfriends. She met her husband, Loren Charles Schwartz, at the park pavilion in Gillett, and they married at St. Bruno’s Catholic Church in Nadeau on June 2nd, 1962. They raised 4 children in their home on Eschner Avenue in Gillett. Above all else, Ethel loved her children and cherished her 13 grandchildren. She loved to golf, camp, fish, visit casinos, eat a good steak, and watch her children and grandchildren in all sorts of sports. Though initially more of a Chicago Bears fan, Ethel became a devout Brett Favre follower, and actually has a personalized autographed picture that she was very proud to own. In 1982 Ethel became a baseball fan, following the Milwaukee Brewers to the brink of the World Series. Finally, she became a big fan of Tiger Woods, and expressed frustration with his recent struggles. Most summer memories were made spending time with the kids in the backyard pool in Gillett, camping throughout Wisconsin and the UP of Michigan, and going to Pickeral Lake. She was a great cook and homemaker for Loren and the kids. Everyone’s favorites included Ethel’s apple pie, meat pie, and homemade dressing. There was not a morning without a homemade breakfast for her children before school, or a day that an amazing dessert was not waiting after dinner. She is survived by her son Rodney (Karen) Schwartz of Pulaski, and their children Brittany (fiancé Kevin Arvey), Eric, and Sam; son Brian (Peggy) Schwartz of Appleton, and their children Leah, Anna, Carrie, and Isaac; daughter Renee (Dave Winger) Schwartz of Neenah, and her children Meghan, Lauren, and Ben; daughter Jodi Symons of Onalaska, and her children Emily, Stephanie, and Drew. Ethel is further survived by her sister Helen Brazil of Redford, MI, and her brother Norbert Poupore of Howard. She was preceded in death by her husband Loren, and her brother Melvin from muscular dystrophy in 1947. For their loving care, Ethel’s family would like to thank Dr. Genadi Maltinski and his staff, Heartland Home Health Care, and the staff at The Cottages of Shawano.
