Alfred A. Mantai, age 90 of Suring, passed away on Monday, October 9, 2017 at Woodland Village of Suring. He was surrounded by family.
Alfred was born in Latvia on March 2, 1927, a son of the late Otto and Mathilda (Nickolai) Mantai. He immigrated to the United States in 1957, and made his home in Chicago, IL. Alfred and his former wife Wanda raised four children together. He worked as a mechanic for General Truck Parts in Chicago, later retiring to the Gillett/Suring area. Alfred was an avid outdoorsman and especially enjoyed fishing. He will be sadly missed.
Alfred is survived by his longtime companion Friedel Mantai of Suring, his son Udo Sille of Ward, CO, and his daughters: Angelica Mantai of Chicago and Heidi Grabowski of Naperville, IL. He also leaves his daughter-in-law, Mary Sille of Plainfield, IL, his grandchildren Andrew, Jenna and Steven and his sisters: Olga (Guenther) Woosmann of Gillett and Else Hoffman of Chicago.
Alfred was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Wolfgang Sille and his siblings: Wilma Maas, Freida Schmeling, Leo Mantai and Kurt Mantai.
Visitation will be Saturday, October 14, 2017 from 12 noon to 2 PM at LEGACY FUNERAL CHAPELS (108 E. Main Street, Gillett, WI 54124). A funeral service will follow at 2 PM with Pastor John Laatsch officiating. Interment will be in Wanderer’s Rest Cemetery, Gillett.
