Preplanning a Funeral: Design your Last Hurrah

How do you want to be remembered? What a profound question. Your funeral service is your last hurrah, leaving a final impression of who you are and how you lived your life. Family and friends will remember your life, and they’ll remember your death. What do you want your send-off to be like? More importantly, how will your loved one know your wishes?

By scheduling a preplanning session, you:

  • Learn about different funeral options.
  • Make decisions that reflect your personality and values.
  • Discuss the costs associated with your decisions.
  • The funeral director records your preplanning decisions.
  • When the time comes, the funeral home acts on this plan.

At the preplanning meeting, you give yourself and your loved ones peace of mind. You provide the information that your family will need at the time of your death. Your loved ones will have a well-conceived outline of your funeral wishes, plus important personal information. This will lessen their burden when they are already grieving.

Part of the Healing Process

So, what types of preplanning decisions will you make? You will decide three basic elements:

  1. Gathering: Allows family and friends to give and receive love and support
  2. Ceremony: Involves an organized tribute to honor the deceased, often with religious overtones
  3. Final Resting Place: Offers a point of closure and gives loved ones a place to return to in the future

A meaningful funeral is an important part of the healing process. At a preplanning session, The funeral director will get to know you and learn about your life. He or she will guide you through the preplanning process with compassion and understanding and prepare an estimate and explain payment options so you can make a sound financial plan.
