Verona “Ronnie” Carlson

Verona Mae “Ronnie” (Brazeau) Carlson, age 89, Gillett, was reunited with her husband Fritz on Thursday, February 28, 2019.  She was surrounded by family.

Ronnie was born in Kelly Lake on December 19, 1929, a daughter of the late Sam and Mary (Miller) Brazeau.  She was a graduate of Gillett High School and a lifetime resident of the area.  Ronnie married Frederick “Fritz” Carlson at Christ Lutheran Church-Hintz on April 10, 1948 and together they raised four children.

Ronnie was an active member of the community for her whole life.  She was instrumental in starting the Youth Government Day in Oconto County and remained active from 1969 to 2014.  She helped to organize the Carlson Family Reunion from 1973 to present and was a bowling league member for over 35 years.  Ronnie spent 27 years with the Northern Gardeners, handled blood mobile registrations for 25 years and drove the elderly to the Gillett Meal Site for over 20 years.  In earlier years, Ronnie took organ lessons at Henri’s Music in Green Bay.  A small group of ladies taking lessons was formed and they played together for many years.  Ronnie was still playing the organ until August of 2018.

Ronnie cooked for many years at the former American Legion Hall and was long active with the Ladies Legion Auxiliary.  Her membership spanned 53 years, and she held numerous positions including historian, Secretary/Chaplin and later President, a post she held for 15 years.  She also distributed poppies for over 30 years.  Ronnie was also a Life Member of the VFW having served over 35 years and had also served as president.  She was active in placing flags for veterans at area cemeteries on Memorial Day for both the Legion Auxiliary and the American Legion and had done so for more than 23 years.

Ronnie was a longtime and devoted member of Christ Lutheran Church-Hintz.  She served with the Ladies Aide for over 50 years.  She kept baptismal records for over 27 years and began doing Medallions for the babies.  Ronnie was pleased to serve as Grand Marshal of the Gillett Fourth of July Parade in 2016.

In addition to her devotion to church and community, Ronnie had a deep love of family.  She enjoyed crocheting and gave many gifts of her handiwork to family and friends.  Ronnie made “the best chocolate chip cookies”!  She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Ronnie leaves her children: Tom (Karen) Carlson, Jane (Bruce) Kitzman, LouAnn (Ervin) Lambrecht and Sheryl (Roger) Peterson.  She also leaves her grandchildren: Nathan Carlson, Brooke Schroeder, Roberta Hecker, Keith Young, Denise Daniels, Carmen Raymaker, Angie Elko, Jody Lambrecht, Marc Lambrecht and Amy Miller.  She also leaves her great-grandchildren: Nolan, Miles, Kaitlyn, Conlin, Brock, Camden, Kaylam Emilie, Alexandra, Sydney, Colton, Reese, Avery, Ivy, Edi Rae, Kendra, Mason, Zander, Jaden, Allynson, Brandon and McKenna.  Ronnie is further survived by her sister, Bernice Christiansen, sisters-in-law: Alberta Brazeau and Lenea Carlson; her brothers-in-law Everett Carlson and Penny Nicholas as well as many other relatives and friends.
