Ruth Schneider

Ruth Schneider

Ruth B. (Fabry) Schneider, age 79, longtime resident of Oconto Falls, passed away peacefully at Unity Hospice in DePere on Tuesday, August 29, 2017.

Ruth was born in Oconto Falls on April 7, 1938, a daughter of the late John and Veteline (Osmon) Fabry. She attended local schools and was a 1956 graduate of Oconto Falls High School. In 1959, Ruth met her future husband, Gale, while roller skating at Kelly Lake Roller Rink Casino, now known as the Holiday Inn. They were married at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Gillett and together they raised three sons.

Ruth and Gale lived briefly in California, Gillett and then Chicago where she worked as a beautician, then later moved to Ashwaubenon. She worked as a clerk for the Milwaukee Railroad for 10 years and also served as the Union’s secretary.

In 1980 the family settled in Oconto Falls. The family later owned the Strike Zone Bowling Alley restaurant in Coleman and then farmed veal outside of Peshtigo. In earlier years, Ruth was an active den mother of the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts and taught herself to play the organ. She enjoyed knitting, bowling and the outdoors, however, her greatest love was for her family. She loved visits from her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and avidly attended their sporting events.

Ruth is survived by her sons: Greg (Becky) Schneider of Peshtigo, Brian (Jamie Hyer) Schneider of Pelican Lake and Keith (Jane) Schneider of Oconto Falls; her brothers Lloyd (Claire) Fabry and William (Donna) Fabry, all of Oconto Falls; her sisters Marie (Johnny) Slempkes of Lena and Rosalyn (Leo) Gilles of Oconto.  She will also be remembered by her grandchildren: Savanna (Jason) Thompson, Briley Schneider, Cody Schneider, David (Melissa) Flom, Andrew Flom, Theresa (Eric) Schroeder, Brianna Schneider, Caleb Schneider, Elisabeth (Derek) Schmelzer and Kirsten (Jared) Dunsworth.  Ruth is further survived by her great grandchildren: Shianna, David, Bryce, Kaden, Parker, Jax, Evelyn and Jameson. She also leaves her brother-in-law Fred Koltz, many nieces and nephews.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Gale on February 2, 2016 and her sister Esther Koltz.

The family sends special thanks to Nick Theisen, Almost Family, as well as the staff of Unity Hospice for their care of Ruth.

A joint memorial visitation for Ruth and Gale will be held on Saturday, September 16, 2017 from 11 to 12:45 PM at LEGACY FUNERAL CHAPELS (108 East Main Street, Gillett, WI 54124).  A joint memorial service will follow in the funeral home at 1 PM with the Reverend John V. Laatsch officiating. Gale will receive full military honors at the conclusion of the memorial service. Final rest will be private.

The summer of something green and beautiful

landscapingPlants have the power to soften a city landscape. Something green and beautiful in the middle of the downtown gives people a natural oasis in an urban setting.

The oasis created at Legacy Funeral Chapels’ Gillett facility at 108 East Main Street took shape earlier this month to perk up the funeral home’s imprint on Main Street and enhance the environment around the funeral home. A flat, grassy area gave way to a curvy and attractive combination of grass, mulch and plantings bordered by a split-rail fence.

Thanks to the work of Corey & Company Landscaping Services of Oconto Falls, the side yard has been transformed into a garden-like setting.

The new look creates a more inviting place for people to congregate outdoors to visit with the family, friends, and neighbors pulled together by the loss of a loved one. Visitors can step outside to catch a breath of fresh air or take a calming break from a memorial service or visitation at the funeral home. A porch swing adds a peaceful spot to rest and refresh on a mild day.

Like the recent plantings at the Ebenreiter Community Square in downtown Gillett, the new landscaping at Legacy Funeral Chapels adds beauty to the city.

The landscaping project is part of an ongoing commitment to improve the facility in Gillett, inside and out. Since 2016, the interior has been completely repainted, bathrooms remodeled, and furniture replaced or re-covered. Lighting fixtures have been updated and draperies removed to create a brighter, open and more contemporary look where people feel comfortable gathering. Larger TV monitors offer a better view of videos lovingly made in remembrance of someone special.

Renovations are also ongoing at the West Side Green Bay location of Legacy Funeral Chapels at 838 South Fisk Street.

The end result is an atmosphere in which people can lovingly remember and say farewell to a loved one in a comfortable and home-like setting.
